Snapshots in Event Sourcing

The Aggregate pattern's one-stream rule means loading an aggregate replays its ENTIRE history, every single time — fine for dozens of events, a real cost for thousands. Snapshotting is the fix, and knowing exactly what it trades away is the point of this module.

Learning objectives

  • Explain precisely why full event replay on every aggregate load becomes a measurable cost at scale
  • Implement a snapshot strategy in Axon using a snapshot trigger based on event count
  • Trace exactly how a snapshot changes the aggregate loading sequence without changing its loading CONTRACT
  • Evaluate the storage and complexity cost a snapshot adds against the replay time it saves
  • Decide, for a given aggregate, whether snapshotting is actually warranted or premature optimization
