Helm: Kubernetes' Package Manager

Deploying a Spring Boot service to Kubernetes means hand-writing a Deployment, a Service, and a ConfigMap for every environment. Helm turns that into a versioned, parameterized package — a chart — and this module covers charts, templating, releases, and rollbacks.

Learning objectives

  • Beginner: Explain what a Helm chart is and how it relates to a plain set of Kubernetes YAML manifests.
  • Beginner: Describe the role of values.yaml versus the templates directory in a chart.
  • Intermediate: Template a Spring Boot Deployment, Service, and ConfigMap as a Helm chart parameterized by environment.
  • Intermediate: Install, upgrade, and roll back a release using the Helm CLI.
  • Advanced: Design a chart's values schema so the same chart deploys safely to dev, staging, and production with only values overrides.
  • Advanced: Explain what a Helm release revision is and how rollback differs from simply re-applying old YAML.
