Service Discovery Inside Kubernetes

Kubernetes solves service discovery differently from Eureka — through ClusterIP Services, cluster DNS, and kube-proxy rather than a client-side registry. This module covers that native mechanism and contrasts it with the Eureka-based approach already covered for non-Kubernetes environments.

Learning objectives

  • Beginner: Explain what a Kubernetes Service is and how it differs from a Pod.
  • Beginner: Describe how a Pod resolves another service's ClusterIP through cluster DNS.
  • Intermediate: Trace a request from DNS lookup through kube-proxy to a backing Pod.
  • Intermediate: Contrast Kubernetes' platform-managed discovery with Eureka's client-side registry-and-heartbeat model.
  • Advanced: Decide whether a service migrating to Kubernetes still needs Eureka, and under what circumstances it might.
  • Advanced: Explain why Kubernetes service discovery doesn't need an equivalent to Eureka's self-preservation mode.
