Redis — Distributed Locking with Redisson's RLock

A java.util.concurrent lock only coordinates threads inside one JVM. The moment an application runs as more than one instance — which is most real deployments — something else has to coordinate access to a shared resource across all of them, and Redis is a common place to put that coordination.

Learning objectives

  • Explain why a local Java lock cannot coordinate access across multiple application instances.
  • Implement a distributed lock using Redisson's RLock in a Spring Boot service.
  • Explain the watchdog mechanism and why it exists.
  • Identify the correctness caveats of a naive SET NX-based lock implementation.
  • Describe the core of the Redlock debate at a level sufficient to make an informed design decision.
