Garbage Collection Tuning

Moving from knowing what the collectors do to actually tuning one for a real workload: the G1 flags that matter in practice, when a pause-time goal justifies reaching for ZGC instead, how to read a GC log without guessing, and a worked scenario that diagnoses a GC problem from its symptoms rather than from theory alone.

Learning objectives

  • Tune G1's most impactful flags for a real workload, understanding what each one actually trades off
  • Decide, for a given set of symptoms, whether G1 tuning is enough or ZGC is genuinely warranted
  • Read a GC log and extract pause type, pause duration, and heap occupancy before and after
  • Diagnose a GC-related production symptom (long pauses, frequent full GCs, high allocation rate) by working backward from observed behavior
