HikariCP reports a connection timeout although database connections are available. What could be happening?

Tests whether you check for connection leaks (connections checked out but never returned to the pool, e.g. missing try-with-resources), a pool misconfigured below actual demand, or long-held connections from slow transactions -- not assuming the DB itself is the bottleneck just because it reports availability.
