MongoDB — Change Streams & Atlas Vector Search

Two capabilities that both extend MongoDB past plain CRUD: Change Streams let application code react the instant a document changes anywhere in a collection, and Atlas Vector Search lets a document carry a numeric embedding and be found by meaning instead of by exact field match — the storage-layer half of what powers a lot of modern AI retrieval.

Learning objectives

  • Explain how Change Streams are built on top of the replication oplog.
  • Implement a Change Stream listener in Java and resume it safely after a disconnect.
  • Identify real use cases for Change Streams: cache invalidation, audit logging, and triggering downstream processing.
  • Explain what a vector embedding is at a storage level and why Atlas Vector Search stores it alongside the source document.
  • Run a basic $vectorSearch aggregation stage and explain how it differs from a normal equality or range query.
